THE Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Omu-Aran, Kwara, says it has taken measures to ensure uninterrupted flow of traffic on Ilorin-Omu-Aran highway following the collapse of two bridges in Niger State on Monday.

Mr Francis Adetunji, the FRSC Unit Commander in the area, gave the assurance during an Interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Omu-Aran, Irepodun Local Government Area on Thursday.

Adetunji was speaking against the backdrop of the collapse of the bridges which had forced diversion and in the process increased the volume of traffic on Ilorin-Omu-Aran-Kabba highway.

NAN reports that the collapsed bridges were located at Tatabu and Bokani villages in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State.

They were said to have given way following heavy downpour.

Adetunji said that the command had envisaged the diversion and had swung to action by stepping up its surveillance and patrols of the Ilorin-Omu-Aran highway to forestall any ugly incidents.

The FRSC said that the command had embarked on a sensitisation visit to some communities along the highway as a way of educating the people on the development.

He enjoined the people, especially motorist to avoid travelling late into the night to guard against unwarranted crashes.

“We have been to different communities and held meetings with community leaders for them to in turn sensitise the residence, especially road side traders and students to always be at alert.

“We have equally held a stakeholders meeting with transports unions, including those of commercial motorcyclist on the need for their members to apply caution while using the highway.

“The towing operators within the command have also been put on red alert in case of any broken down of trucks and other vehicles so as not to obstruct the smooth flow of traffic,” Adetunji said.

The unit commander said the command in collaboration with Irepodun Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) was organising an enlightenment initiative for youths and teenagers in Omu-Aran later in the month.

According to him, the enlightenment initiative tagged: “Ensuring the Safety of Our Future Leaders on the Road’’ was aimed at educating the youths on some basic rudiments on road traffic tips and regulations.
