A Cleric, Pastor Emmanuel Abiola of Salvation Church of Christ, Ilorin, has identified ethnic tolerance among the different ethnic nationalities in the country can ensure nationwide peace.
Abiola said this in Ilorin on Tuesday while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
He said that ethnic and religious intolerance among the different ethnic and religious groups in the country were the factors responsible for the tensed atmosphere across the country.
According to him, it is unfortunate that many Nigerians have allowed ethnic differences to turn them into prejudiced and narrow-minded citizens.
“The Hausa man will never trust the Igbo man; likewise the Igbo man will never trust the Hausa man for one reason or the other.
“Same applies to the Yoruba man. There is fear, suspicion and mistrust everywhere in the country.
“A Christian will see his or her Muslim brothers and sisters as enemies; the same applies to the Muslims.
“How then do you expect peace to reign where there is no trust and love?,” he said.
The cleric, therefore, advised Nigerians to eschew ethnic and religious discrimination and focus on issues that would unite them and promote peace.
He also called on government at all levels as well as religious leaders and the media to sensitize the public to the virtues of tolerance.
